I was told that if i plait my hair it would look good but im having problems plaiting it at the top to when its done the top is straight and the rest curly. i dont want tight curls just nice loose shabby chic style.

Try french-braiding the top. You could also put curlers in and then brush them a lot right afterwards. Or, as a third alternative, you could "scrunch" your hair with your fingers as it's drying.
